Estimating Carbohydrates in Dog Food

Food consists of the following components:

  1. Protein
  2. Fat
  3. Carbohydrates (Including fiber)
  4. Ash

Ash is the residue remains if you burn everything up.
Typically values for ash content are between 10%-6%

Estimating carbohydrate content on Fido’s Reviews from the Guaranteed analysis we use the following steps.

Step 1

To estimate the carbohydrate content we make the assumption the ash content is 9% (Dry Matter).

Step 2

Convert the protein, fat, and fiber values for the dog food recipes from  Guaranteed analysis values to Dry matter analysis

Step 3

Calculate the carbohydrate content without fiber using the following:

%Carbs Estimated  = 100% – %Protein + %Fat +% Fiber + 9% Ash )

Step 4

We convert it from the Dry matter analysis back to the Guaranteed analysis for our dry dog food reviews.

*Note: The estimated Carb value is limited to accuracy and is only a rough estimate, since we make an assumption about the ash content, and the Guaranteed analysis reported by the dog food company are Min and Max values for: protein, fat, fiber, and moisture.
