Review Summary:

The first ingredient Chicken is a good source of protein that provides the essential amino acids a dog needs. Then it uses pea protein to bolster the protein level, but the amino acid profile is not as good as meat proteins. Tapioca is the third ingredient, which is almost a pure carb. This ingredient maybe a significant contributor to the relatively high estimated carb levels in this recipe. Tapioca is likely used to bind the ingredients together, but an alternative ingredient would be preferred that offer more nutritional value than just carbs. Eggs provide excellent protein too and healthy fatty Omega-3 fatty acid. There are a few vegetables further down for other nutrients. The dietary fiber level is relatively high for this recipe, which may be mainly attributed to the added pea fiber. The minerals supplemented are “Protienate”, which aids absorption by the body. One complain is the label does not disclose more nutritional info on vitamins, minerals, and healthy Omega fatty acids. Overall, this baked recipe that claims freshness offers a good blend of ingredients that are wholesome is just above average.

  • Chelated / Proteinate minerals for better body absorption
  • Relatively higher in dietary-fiber
  • Good variety of wholesome vegetables and fruits
  • Cons

  • May contain too much non-dietary fiber carbohydrates
  • Added Tapioca is low in nutritional value, and only significant in carbohydrates
  • Does not provides Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids content
  • No nutritional information on vitamins, and minerals

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Chicken
    2. Pea Protein
    3. Tapioca
    4. Peas
    5. Eggs

Chicken is a good start and source of protein that effectively covers each of the essential amino acids a dog needs, but keep in mind on this ingredient rank list, it factors in the water content, which is roughly about 70% or more water.

Pea protein is from processed peas with most of the starch removed. It is a good source of protein, with almost no carbohydrates. Also, there isn’t any dietary fiber either.

Tapioca or Tapioca starch (also known as tapioca flour) is high in carbohydrates and calories. It is good for energy, but of course too much carbs will go towards storage as fat. Beyond this, it does not offer much nutrients, fiber, or protein. This ingredient is a poor choice for average dog’s diet.

Peas are a good source of fiber, protein, and other nutrients too, but note that it does contribute carbohydrates from its starch.

Eggs are a good source of protein and Omega-3 fatty acid.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Lentils offers protein, but the amino acid profile is not balanced for dogs. Also, it is high in carbohydrates, but this includes dietary fiber too.

Sweet potatoes contains an abundant amount of vitamin A and beta–carotene, which are important for the eyes / vision. It is also a good source of fiber and be aware that it does offer carbohydrates, since it is a starchy food type.
