Review Summary:

This recipe offers three types of fish meal that provides protein with an effective profile of the essential amino acid profile a dog needs. Crowding near the top of the ingredient list, there are carb heavy ingredients and this is reflected in the relatively high estimated carbs. Such high carbs may be more than needed for some dogs. Dried beet pulp is commonly found in a dog food, but in this case it is relatively high on the ingredient list, and is something to watch out for b/c it may potentially not sit well with your dog’s gastrointestinal tract due to saponins. There are a diverse number of vegetables and fruits to provide other important nutrients, but several of them a too low on the ingredient list to likely add any significance. Overall, this recipe is above average.

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Anchovy & Sardine Meal
    2. Oatmeal
    3. Ground Brown Rice
    4. Ground White Rice
    5. Salmon Meal

Anchovy, Sardine, and further down Salmon meal are processed fish parts and bones that are grounded down. It provides protein with an effective profile of the essential amino acid profile a dog needs, and healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.

Oatmeal is ground oat groats, which are high in carbohydrates, and offer protein and fiber too.

Brown rice is good source of fiber and contains more nutrients than white rice. It does contain a high amount of carbohydrates.

White rice is lower in dietary fiber than brown because white rice lacks the germ and bran. It does contain a high amount of other carbohydrates. Also, its glycemic index is significantly higher than brown rice, which translates to a quicker surge in blood sugar and higher insulin levels as a response by the body. For dogs that are diabetic or at risk of becoming diabetic, this is effect and ingredient is undesirable and should be avoided.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Dried beet pulp is a source of fiber, but the saponins it contains may cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. If you choose a dog food with this ingredient, then keep a careful watch on your dog and consider discontinuing use if there are any signs of discomfort or irregularities.

Dried Egg product are eggs that are removed from the shell, then processed and pasteurized at a factory. Its composition does not necessary contain both the yolk and egg white from each egg. The manufacture may blend them at any ratio and may include non-egg products for processing purposes.

Peas are a good source of fiber, protein, and other nutrients too, but note that it does contribute carbohydrates from its starch.
