Review Summary:

This recipe offers Buffalo meat protein that provides all the amino acids a dog needs. However, crowded in the top of the ingredient list are several potatoes related ingredients. This may result in higher carbs than necessary for some dogs. Also, this is reflected in the relatively high estimated carbs. It would be nice to see more vegetables and/or fruits. Only a couple of minerals are “Protienate”, which is better than none. Overall, this recipe is average.

Pros

  • Chelated / Proteinate minerals for better body absorption
  • Cons

  • May contain too much non-dietary fiber carbohydrates

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Water Sufficient for Processing
    2. Buffalo
    3. Sweet Potatoes
    4. Potatoes
    5. Dehydrated Potatoes

    Water

Buffalo  is a good start and source of protein with all the essential amino acids for dogs, but keep in mind on this ingredient rank list, it factors in the water content, which is roughly about 70% or more water.

Sweet potatoes contains an abundant amount of vitamin A and beta–carotene, which are important for the eyes / vision. It is also a good source of fiber and be aware that it does offer carbohydrates, since it is a starchy food type.

Potatoes are a starchy food, thus it does contributes carbohydrates. Notably it is a good source for fiber, vitamin C B6, and potassium.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Carrageenans or Carrageenins is extracted from red edible seaweeds. For both humans and animal feed it is used in the food industry, for their gelling, thickening, and stabilizing properties. For humans the FDA regulations deemed it to be considered safe for as a direct food additive, and also safe for infant formulas. The EU takes greater precaution by prohibiting its use in infant formula and organic food claims, but it does permit it for other foods. The potential concern for use of Carrageenan is it may be linked to cancer for humans and various animals, but at the present this is still debatable and not clear. Many companies use it in wet dog food, thus it is relatively hard to avoid if you desire to do so.
