Review Summary:

There are a variety of fish ingredients in this recipe with Salmon meal leading off. Fish offers protein with the essential amino acids that a dog needs and provides good Omega-3 fatty acid too. Next, there is variety of fruits and vegetables to further support a good spread of nutrients. Tapioca is a low value ingredient that is heavy in carbohydrates and lacks other nutritional value, but in this case, it may have been added to provide more energy because the recipe is lean on carb oriented ingredients. It would have been better if another ingredient was used with higher nutritional value was used instead of Tapioca. This recipe excels in protein levels and Omega-3 fatty acids. In summary, it is an excellent recipe to consider.

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Salmon Meal
    2. Salmon
    3. Tapioca
    4. Canola Oil
    5. Menhaden Fish Meal

Salmon meal is processed salmon parts and bones that are grounded down. Both it and Salmon provides protein with the essential amino acids a dog needs  and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Tapioca starch (also known as tapioca flour) is high in carbohydrates and calories. Beyond this, it does not offer much nutrients, fiber, or protein. This ingredient is a poor choice for average dog’s diet. It would be better to use another ingredient that has more nutritional value.

Canola oil is low in saturated fat and offers both Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids.  If it matter to you, then please note, it is very likely sourced from genetically modified crops.

Menhaden meal is a fish meal that provides protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. Menhaden refers to a specific fish that is relatively small.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Rosemary oil or Rosemary extract has a few health benefits and can be found in various dog food brands. One of them is an antioxidant. It can also improve or be a stimulant to the circulatory system. However, some say it is associated with epileptic seizure for some dogs. There is no concrete evidence of this, thus we suggest be caution about it and avoid it if your dog had any past seizures or instability.
