Review Summary:

The nutritional label offers minimal information, and does not offer info on vitamin and mineral content. Chicken starts of the ingredient list, which provides good meat protein. However, from there are a many grains to follow. Grains offer a variety of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. However, the down side of grain is it comes with lots of other carbohydrates that are not dietary fiber. The high number of grains is reflected in the estimated carb content, which is relatively high. Thus, in this recipe there may be more carbs than needed for some dogs. There are a couple of added minerals that are “Proteinate” to help aid better body absorption. Overall, this recipe average.

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Chicken
    2. Organic Barley
    3. Organic Oats
    4. Organic Peas
    5. Chicken Meal

Chicken  is a good start and source of protein with all the essential amino acids for dogs, but keep in mind on this ingredient rank list, it factors in the water content, which is roughly about 70% or more water.

Barley is a cereal grain that provides a good source of fiber and contains eight out of the ten essential amino acids for dogs. Do note, it is rich in carbohydrates.

Oats are a cereal grain that is high in carbohydrates and a good portion of this is comprised of dietary fiber. It also offers protein too amongst other nutrients.

Peas are a good source of fiber, protein, and other nutrients too, but note that it does contribute carbohydrates from its starch.

Chicken  meal is rendered parts from grinding carcasses and/or remains after the main meat is removed. There are pros and cons to meal. Its advantage is it provides lots of protein with the essential amino acids that a dog needs for a relatively lower cost and contains low moisture content relative to straight forward named meat ingredients. However, it goes through an extensive heating and processing to ensure it is safe to eat. Not much flavor is preserved and other nutrients are wiped out.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Sorghum (Milo) is a grain where its feed value is similar to corn. Adding sorghum maybe a tactic to substitute corn out or help lower the ingredients in the order they rank. Similar to corn, the concern is too many carbohydrates it may contribute to the diet.

Brown rice is good source of fiber and contains more nutrients than white rice. It does contain a high amount of carbohydrates.

Millet is a grain and is a good source of fiber, but is rich in other carbohydrates too.

Rice is a source of fiber. It does contain a high amount of carbohydrates.

Rosemary oil or Rosemary extract has a few health benefits and can be found in various dog food brands. One of them is an antioxidant. It can also improve or be a stimulant to the circulatory system. However, some say it is associated with epileptic seizure for some dogs. There is no concrete evidence of this, thus we suggest be caution about it and avoid it if your dog had any past seizures or instability.
