Review Summary:

Chicken by-product meal is the meat source that provides need protein with essential amino acid, but some consider this source of meat as a lower grade and quality. Disappointingly there isn’t a straight named meat source in the ingredient list such as “Chicken” to supplement the first meat source. Near the top of the ingredient list there are a bunch of low cost carb heavy ingredients such as rice and wheat. Aside from the fortified minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients, there aren’t much natural ingredients. Do note, the minerals are poteinate for better body absorption. It would be helpful if the nutrition listing provided more information too. Overall, there isn’t anything spectacular about this recipe and is average.

Pros

  • Chelated / proteinate minerals for better body absorption
  • Provides Omega-3 fatty acid content
  • Cons

  • Does not contain at least one good meat source (ie Chicken, Beef, Lamb, etc..)
  • Does not provide Omega-6 fatty acid content info
  • Minimal nutritional information provided.
  • May contain too much non-dietary fiber carbohydrates

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Chicken by-product meal
    2. Brewers rice
    3. Wheat
    4. Brown rice
    5. Chicken fat

Chicken by-product meal is rendered parts from parts that are not considered fit for human consumption. They grind down these parts, which may include the carcasses and/or remains after the main meat is removed. It may contain bones, lungs, brains, underdeveloped eggs, intestine, etc… Also, it goes through an extensive heating and processing to ensure it is safe to eat. Some people consider this ingredient to be inferior quality to other meat sources and prefer to avoid it. Like the typical meat, it does offer needed protein with good amino acid profile.

Brewers rice is milled & processed rice. This processing strips valuable nutrients out, leaving the residual grain fragment, resulting in a carbohydrate biased focused filler. Without much relative value, it is a poor choice of ingredient.

Wheat is a source of dietary-fiber and offers some protein too, but it is relatively high in other carbohydrates.

Brown rice is good source of fiber and contains more nutrients than white rice. It does contain a high amount of carbohydrates.

Chicken fat is a good for dogs in the right amount, whom can metabolize fat and used for various body system functions, including for energy.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Dried beet pulp is a source of fiber, but the saponins it contains may cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. If you choose a dog food with this ingredient, then keep a careful watch on your dog and consider discontinuing use if there are any signs of discomfort or irregularities.

Grain distiller’s dried yeast is a good source for proteins and vitamins. The proteins from yeast are complete and it offers good B-complex vitamins particular. However, a possible drawback is some dogs maybe allergic or will develop an allergy toward yeast. Thus, take caution and keep a careful eye on your dog.

Rosemary oil or Rosemary extract has a few health benefits and can be found in various dog food brands. One of them is an antioxidant. It can also improve or be a stimulant to the circulatory system. However, some say it is associated with epileptic seizure for some dogs. There is no concrete evidence of this, thus we suggest be caution about it and avoid it if your dog had any past seizures or instability.
