Review Summary:

This recipe is tuned for weight control with the relatively higher dietary fiber content and lower calorie count. The Pollock fish source provides a good meat protein source along with healthy Omega-3 fatty acid too. There are a variety of vegetables and fruits, but most are very low on the ingredient list to be considered significant to count. The minerals are protienate to aid better body absorption. One small unfavorable note is the added Tapioca, which just provides carbohydrates and no other nutritional value, but there are many other ingredients that make up for this. Overall, this recipe is a good.

Pros

  • Provides Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids content
  • Chelated / Proteinate minerals
  • Relatively higher in dietary-fiber

    Ingredients Analysis

    First 5 Ingredients:

    1. Pollock
    2. Pollock Meal
    3. Pea Fiber
    4. Oatmeal
    5. Pearled Barley

Pollock is fish meat, while Pollock fish meal is processed fish parts and bones that are grounded down. Both provides excellent protein and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Pea fiber comes from processed peas where the fiber is extracted from the rest of the pea. This strips out the protein, nutrients, and other carbohydrates.

Oatmeal is ground oat groats, which are high in carbohydrates, and offer protein and fiber too.

Pearl barley is a cereal grain with its hull and bran removed. Despite losing the bran, which is rich in nutrients and fiber, it still provides a good source of fiber from the inner kernel and contains eight out of the ten essential amino acids for dogs. Do note, it is rich in carbohydrates.

Other Ingredients to be Aware of

Brown rice is good source of fiber and contains more nutrients than white rice. It does contain a high amount of carbohydrates.

Peas are a good source of fiber, protein, and other nutrients too, but note that it does contribute carbohydrates from its starch.

Tapioca or Tapioca starch (also known as tapioca flour) is high in carbohydrates and calories. Beyond this, it does not offer much nutrients, fiber, or protein. This ingredient is a poor choice for average dog’s diet.
